Simon of Cyrene and the Legend of the EA Terri Degazelle Utomo Gabhor 9780819890702 Books
When our first son was born, we started collecting books with "Alexander" in the title. This was easy to do, as there are many historical figures with the name, as well as fictional characters. Sadly, our second son Simon is not as lucky as there is a dearth of "Simon" books, but this one made for an excellent start to his collection. Simon of Cyrene is a real Biblical figure, and this book extrapolates on details from the Biblical accounts. I had not heard the 'legend of the Easter egg' before, but it was fun to read about, especially since our Simon was due on Easter.Product details

Simon of Cyrene and the Legend of the EA Terri Degazelle Utomo Gabhor 9780819890702 Books Reviews
Pauline Media provided me with a copy of Simon of Cyrene and the Legend of the Easter Egg in exchange for an honest review.
This sweet picture book was a perfect classroom read aloud during Holy Week. While its main audience would probably be more 1st-3rd graders, my 5th grade students were all ears and enjoyed discussing the story of St. Simon of Cyrene.
We only know a little bit from Scripture about the man who helped carry Jesus' cross on God Friday. His sons Alexander and Rufus are mentioned again later in Scripture, implying that the family became Christians. But what happened after Simon's quick encounter that led to his family's conversion?
This 40 page book incorporates what we know from Scripture with a German folk tale about St. Simon. It brings Simon to Jerusalem as an egg seller, tells of him helping Jesus on His Way of the Cross, and then has Simon stick around. Spending time on Holy Saturday waiting with the apostles and Mary, Simon hears the stories of Jesus' life, and then is present on Easter morning when the first news of the Resurrection reaches the disciples. He returns eagerly to tell his family about his encounter. The eggs he had brought to sell had been forgotten, but when he arrives home he finds that they miraculously have been changed to bright colors, all symbolizes something about the Christian life.
I loved the beautiful illustrations in this book, done by Gabhor Utomo. The vivid facial expressions as well the contrast of action in the foreground and faded scenes in the background made it visually interesting even for older readers. It also combines a personal touch to images we see frequently in the form of the Stations of the Cross, making it more relatable for children.
A small disappointment was the book's size. It is only 6 1/4" x 7 1/2" (which is correctly listed in the book's info), but it does make it a little harder to use as a read aloud. I'd love to see a new edition with much larger pages allowing the readers to see all the details of the lovely illustrations.
I would highly recommend this book as an addition to your home or classroom as a book to help celebrate Lent and Easter, as well as for a study of early Saints or evangelization.
Easter egg hunts are a tradition many families, both Christian and secular, still perform. The parents love this task, because it keeps the kids busy for a while, and the kids love this task, because the eggs usually contain candy, money, or little trinkets. But where did the tradition of Easter eggs come from? If you had asked me when I was a child, I would have told you the Easter Bunny. If you had asked me several years ago, I would have told you Mary Magdalene. Now, thanks to Pauline Books and Media, I have learned of a tradition involving Simon of Cyrene. The book is called Simon of Cyrene and the Legend of the Easter Egg.
The book begins with Simon of Cyrene going to the market in Jerusalem to try and sell a basket of eggs. Upon his entry in Jerusalem, Simon sees a crowd of people and a man dragging a cross. Simon doesn't recognize the man, but another man, John the Apostle, explains to Simon who Jesus is and how He is innocent. Simon is then tasked with helping Jesus carry the cross. After Jesus' Crucifixion, Simon is thanked by by Jesus' mother and invited to spend the night and rest. It is here that he learns more about Jesus and His ministry. Simon sticks around several more days and learns firsthand of the Resurrection. After the celebration at the good news, Simon had to depart for home, without selling any of his eggs. When he arrives home, he tells his family all that happened and when he opened the basket of eggs, he sees that they have been transformed in color from white to all different bright colors.
Simon of Cyrene is essentially a footnote in Sacred Scripture. However, he played a a very important part in Jesus' Passion, and is remembered in the Stations of the Cross for his role. This book expounds on his minor role by re-creating what Simon might have been thinking and feeling during Jesus' Passion. Many people don't think of Simon as someone who willingly helped Jesus and who also quickly disappeared after the fact. Instead, we get a picture of a man who was changed by his brief encounter with Jesus. At the end of the book is a brief biography of Simon and a prayer for courage and compassion. This is an excellent book and one you should pick up for your child and put in their Easter basket.

Great story
This is a wonderful book combining the tradition of Easter, the cross, Simon carrying Jesus' cross and Easter eggs.
Terri's book is well written and will become the Easter Cup of Tea to be read every Easter and remembered as a family tradition for years to come.
Love being able to relate tradition to the actual story. kids loved it too
Terri DeGezelle is a talented author! Loved the book! It's hard to find just the right picture book to put in an Easter basket, and this book fits the bill. I'm sure it's one that will be read all year long, regardless of when the holiday starts or ends.
